Getting Married in Dubai taken from www.xpress4me.com
With a great location, sunny weather all year round and no dearth of exotic locations to host wedding receptions, an increasing number of Christian expats and Western tourists are making Dubai their destination of choice for their dream wedding.
Powered by the Web and the help of wedding planning agencies, Dubai has become a fast-rising tourist destination, giving the old favourites like Seychelles and the Caribbean islands a run for their money.
“People want the real thing. They do want to get married.” Rev Canon Stephen Wright Angela James, who has run the wedding planner outfit www.confettiabroad.com (one of about a dozen such outfits in Dubai) for the past four years, organised 32 weddings last year.
“This year, I expect a bit more. Most people have concerns about the legality of the marriage. Our advantage is that we know this place,” said Angela, who has lived in Dubai for the last eight years after a six-year stint in Abu Dhabi.
The bulk of her business comes from European, Australian, American and Kiwi couples.
“A lot more people are staying in Dubai to get married. Perhaps they’ve met their fiancé here. It’s a kind of middle ground for both families to come to, especially if the couple comes from two different sides of the globe.
“People are also spoilt for choice in Dubai and the hotel rates are comparable to Europe. Then, there’s lovely sunshine for most of the year.”
Last year, Dubai’s two Anglican churches solemnised about 400 weddings, according to the Rev John Weir, senior chaplain of the AnglicanHolyTrinityChurch.
“By far, the majority of our weddings are Dubai-based couples, not tourists. But there’s a growing number of tourists as well,” said Weir, referring to a Swedish couple who recently had a desert ceremony in Dubai to reaffirm their marriage vows.
Other couples, like Jacqueline, a 30-year-old Filipina, and Ala’a, 27, a Syrian Christian from Ezra have happily walked down the aisle of churches in Dubai.
“We have the blessings of both our families,” Ala’a said before the wedding ceremony.
“We wanted our wedding to be a quiet one. A total of 15 people attended the 45-minute long ceremony, including the videographer. The reception was held at a local restaurant with a few more friends.”
A complex on a hill in Jebel Ali with six Christian churches and a gurdwara (Sikh temple) - standing on land donated by the ruling family - becomes a hive of activity on most weekends.
“We’re not here for the tourists but we also accommodate them if they’ve got the right paperwork,” explained Rev Canon Stephen Wright, chaplain of the AnglicanChristChurch in Jebel Ali.
It’s also become fashionable for affluent European travellers to exchange wedding vows in Dubai’s iconic hotels or desert resorts.
“People want the real thing. They do want to get married. For many people coming from abroad, they may have got married back in their home country, and they want a thanksgiving or blessing done in Dubai.
"I’ve solemnised thanksgiving ceremonies at the Burj Al Arab, The One and Only Royal Mirage and most hotels here,” Wright said.
On several occasions, he said he also blessed couples out in the desert with friends in their 4x4s.
“For me, this is part of normal routine. If I have the time, I go out to bless the couples,” said Wright.
Legal & recognised
- Muslim, Christian and Hindu ceremonies can all be carried out in Dubai, although differing regulations apply for civil weddings. - Muslims can marry at the Dubai Court (the Sharia Court). The groom must be Muslim and the bride can be Christian or Muslim. - Christians can marry at a church and the ceremony is recognised by the UAE government.
