Ian Blakeway - Wildlife Photographer South Africa

While visiting my good friend Brett Hoy who is fortunate enough to call the beautiful Madikwe Game Reserve his home, I was privileged to have been granted the opportunity to observe a group of lion cubs relaxing in a sheltered woodland area. It was just about to rain and the air was charged with the atmosphere of the moment. The cubs were settling in for the rain and we were given a rare opportunity to watch them as they surveyed their domain in anticipation of the forthcoming drenching. When the clouds finally broke they gathered in under the spindly branches and waited it out, as we gradually pulled out of the sighting to head off to the lodge.

These images, are just a few of the wildlife images I have shot in the park and others, but are without doubt my favourite. What made them all the more rewarding for me was that they were my first wildlife images shot on film again. Since the digital revolution there are fewere and fewer people who shoot film based projects. Having just finished an Film only architectural photography yearbook for one of the top property developers in Dubai I was keen to have a go at the wildlife with a few rolls of velvia. I was not dissapointed. While it was a challenge working with slow shutter speeds and low ISO the colours and dimension given to these images makes them worth it. I now do as much shooting as possible on film and have recently invested in a Nikon film scanner to get the most out of my images.

I will be adding more images in the coming weeks, just got to find the one thing that Photographers in Dubai seem to have none of, time...
